The artwork is based on an old photograph—a mother and daughter whose bond was formed through fabric, through clothing.

Artist Yael Biton explains:

"I was born in the 1960s, the eldest daughter of Moroccan immigrant parents who came to Israel out of a deep longing for the love of the land and the holy language.

My mother didn’t speak Hebrew. She didn’t communicate verbally. She was a professional seamstress and designer. She sewed everything for the home and especially loved making dresses for me. This was how she expressed her love and connection to me.

I experienced the entire sewing process with her—from buying fabric at the market to the finished product—and in that way, sewing became our shared language."
