The ceramic vest, worn by IDF soldiers in combat in Gaza, reminds me of the "Efod" – the vestment of the Cohen Gadol, who entered to serve in the Kodesh HaKodashim. The painting describes a soldier who miraculously survived when a bullet fired at him was blocked by a book of Psalms that the soldier held within his vest. The miraculous connection between the vest and the Book of Psalms granted the soldier life, and this connection represents for me the history of the Jewish people, the individual providence that applies to every Jew, and the integration between the effort put into wearing the ceramic vest at war and the power of prayer in the Book of Psalms.
